Latina-Led Businesses Collaborate to Create a Network of Support to Weather COVID Crisis

Unidas is a collective of local businesses in the Bay Area committed to building strong networks while celebrating each other’s strengths

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Aug 7th, 2020)—With the COVID pandemic still waging its war on the health and livelihood of people across the US, many businesses have had to shut their doors. But one new Bay Area group is doing its part to bring businesses together in a collective effort to keep their doors open while offering an array of products and services to local residents.

Unidas is the result of local entrepreneurs taking a proactive approach to doing business during uncertain times. The group is focused on four main values in its network of support: social entrepreneurship, local business, Latina resilience, and cooperation.

The first three businesses to join the Unidas community are Utz Threads, Professional Eco Cleaning, and Pepito’s Paletas. Together, the three represent a varied array of products and services to meet consumers’ needs.

Utz Threads is a textile brand owned by Cinthya Flores that was born from the lively colors and ancestral weaving practices of the Maya Quiché people. Her brand’s products include laptop cases, travel pouches and purses all handmade by tejedoras in Guatemala.

Anahi Rojas is the founder and owner of Professional Eco Cleaning, an ecological cleaning company with cooperative and feminist values. Rojas’ firm offers cleaning for homes and offices across the Bay Area and can help keep spaces healthy and safe in light of the COVID pandemic and beyond.

PepitosPaletas.com is the third company as part of Unidas’ inaugural efforts. The brand is owned by Nancy Rosales and blends traditional Mexican paletas with vegan recipes. Pepito’s Paletas deliver their frozen treats across the Bay Area in their signature eight-hour biodegradable frozen boxes.

“We began this collaboration to be proactive in approaching the sales problems that COVID has thrust upon business owners,” noted Rosales.

Rojas agreed, adding, “We didn’t want to just sit here and accept the status quo, so we put our minds together to inspire business owners in the Latino community to come together.”

“Together, we can go further by leveraging the collective spirit of our cultures and embracing unity in a time when people have been forced to be away from one another” said Flores. “That’s really what Unidas is about—rising up  so unidas, we shine!

A portion of all proceeds generated from businesses affiliated with Unidas will be donated to Prospera, a co-op dedicated to enhancing Latina entrepreneurial advancement.
